My wearable art project was supposed to make someone feel magical so the overall mood of it was supposed to be very magical and mysterious. I created a Masquerade mask with wings on the side of it that had color changing film on them which can only truly have the best effects if seeing it in person. The actual face mask of it was a blue face mask that I covered in felt and sewed swirly designs on it. I think the piece is cohesive and goes well together because it all simple but magical. I think that my project was somewhat successful, I had to recreate the actual mask a total of 3 times because this was my first time working with paper machete and every time I made a mask it would have something wrong with it. This was my third mask and although it wasn't smooth and like what I wanted it to be it was the best I could do. the face mask I sewed took a long time swell but that part of the project I thought was the most successful and I would totally wear it out if it fit me better.Although the mask didn't end up looking exactly like I wanted to I think for the amount of time I spent struggling with it, it turned out great.
Pottery Techniques/stages
Below are the three different forms I made the one on the far left is the slabs, the one on the top right is the coil and the one on the bottom right is my pinch pot
Stages:
Plastic Leather hard Bone dry
Represent me
Below Is my cat that I made for the represent me assignment I created a cat because it represents me as a person I love cats and they are like my emotional support animal and help me alot. They also love to sleep just like me.(it wouldn't let me add my third picture)
Designed Pinch Pot
Below is my designed pinch pot. This piece is a tooth shaped pot with a whole at the top with wings connected to the side it is hand sized. When I made this piece I started off with a pinch pot that was a pretty large size I shaped it into a bell pepper shape and added the bottom root part of the tooth. I added the tooth lines as I smoothed it all together. Lastly I sculpted the wings and used a scraper tool to draw in the wing details. I then connected it all together by slipping it together and let it dry.
Animal Head
For my piece I made a cat head. I used a couple of cat references to create the shape of the head. I sculpted a long pinch pot and added the ears by slipping it together. I created the fur texture by using the scraper tool and scrapping the clay while it was leather hard. I used my cat as a reference on the fur direction. I picked the cat head to create because it is my favorite animal and I was pretty familiar with their faces. I think that my piece is successful because it looks like a cat. This project was a bit difficult to create and while I was sculpting I couldn’t figure out what looked off in the cats face even when comparing it to my cats face.
Sgrafitto
This peice was a sgrafitto plate with a flower design. I wanted to create a plate that can be used for jewelry. I designed this piece by thinking about the size and design of my plate and how I would put it on a plate. I used this image because I thought that flowers would contract well on a black and white plate and make it look delicate. I think my piece is successful because although I had to restart the underglaze a few times It turned out smooth and somewhat even. This design isn’t perfect and is unsymmetrical but it adds to what I wanted the plate to look like. I didn’t have an exact idea of what I wanted it to look like when I was creating this so I think that made me look at it as very successful.
NCMA Art Breakdown
Title: Romantic Landscape Subject: Landscape Textures: The textures are almost "fluffy" giving the painting a relaxing look. Meaning: The artist wanted everyone to see the beauty of nature. Color Scheme: Analogous - consist of yellows and greens
My piece was a tripod mug which has 3 legs with a handle. The handle was inspired by the wood in the painting. The handle has similar lines to bark on trees and the main part of the mug has leaf imprints. The handle and leaf inspiration was taken from the art piece since there is lots of nature involved. I ended up glazing my piece green due to how much green I saw in the picture. There is also some pink on the handle of the mug which wasn't my intent. I thought that the colors would mix more after being glazed and fired but it still fits the paintings theme. To make this piece I followed the instructional video that was provided. I created a slab which I then connected by slipping the long edge of the slab. I then made the little feet of the mug and pushed out the inside to make it more round. My last step before decorating the piece was creating the handle. I used the pull method to create the handle. The decorations were pretty simple and required the sharp needle tool which I used to make the lines of the bark on the handle. I collected leaves from outside and imprinted them on the main part of the mug and I left them until the mug was almost completely dry. After being fired I glazed the piece green and used green and pink on the handle to create a muddy color which ended up being fired as a combination of pink and green. My piece is inspired by the NCMA painting because of the way I added nature onto my piece. I used leaves on my mug which connects the nature to my piece. I also used similar colors as the painting. I feel like this painting made it hard to do what I really wanted since I thought this assignment was a bit challenging. I thought that I used the painting as inspiration as best as I could and it ended up being successful.
Choice project (jewelry)
For my project choice I decided to pick the ceramic jewelry. I have made my own jewelry but never this way so I found it a very interesting project. My jewelry is a black and grey jewelry set. To create my jewelry I started off with a small ball shape which I then flattened and shaped into the shape that I wanted. After creating my desired shape I then left the piece to dry and painted it with underglaze which I then scraped parts off to create my designs. My piece used balance of the black and grey colors and the nature theme. I feel like my plan ended up being consisted to what I had in mind before creating my piece. I feel like my piece was successful because I like some of the jewelry pieces a lot. I was pretty rushed when creating these pieces and I ran out of ideas of what to put on the pieces but I feel like it was still successful.
Land art mini project
For my mini project I created a heart with the colors I had in my yard. It has yellow accents to accentuate my piece. I picked yellow flowers and yellow leaves to make the piece stand out. I used rocks as the base of my piece. Land art is difficult to do especially without tools or a limited area with limited supplies. Land art seems like a more challenging project and if I had more tools or things to work with I could really get creative with it.
Installation
My installation piece was a flowerpot. I wanted to create a large cardboard rose but the cardboard was to difficult to work with and I ended up making the pot and stems out of cardboard and using paper to create the roses. I wanted to create a flower because nature themed art is the most fun to work with and a lot of my work has had something to do with it. My installation dosent have a deep meaning and it creates a calm feeling. Nature is very calming and I wanted to create something that creates a fun and calm feeling.
